Lousy Economy? Yes...But IT Never Ends!
Even in a lousy economy there is IT stuff that has to be done; these are projects not influenced by economic conditions but driven solely on compliance and business best practices issues to ensure security and continuance.
There are (among others) three very important areas to maintain a healthy IT department within your company no matter what the economy throws your way:
- Security: whether you have had to downsize or not due diligence must be taken to ensure your networks are secure and free from spyware or other malicious attacks.
- Intelligence: Did your company get caught in the staffing crunch? Every IT department should be staffed with the best available people and resources. Now is the time to perform a review of who you have and what they know.
- Roadmap: Does your company’s strategic IT plan align with the new reality? If your company’s current state of affairs hasn’t been cross-checked against the IT departments earlier roadmap you could be wasting money.
The current economic times may limit an IT department from adding or hiring any new full time employees BUT having skilled contract workers available has its benefits—such as:
- Once a project is completed you won’t have a resource on your bench that you have to reposition or let go.
- You have access to individuals with multiple talent skill sets that may be very hard to find but necessary to competently execute your project.
- When working with the right resource company, you can have a virtual bench of consultants at your fingertips.
- There is no reason for not having a skill set or qualified IT worker when one is needed.
The best way to take advantage of the available IT industry talent is to work with a recruitment company that knows IT, understands today’s business concerns, and can define and focus on the critical project requirements when matching a qualified candidate to a specific project.
A good recruitment firm takes extra steps to get to know a candidate through an interviewing and screening process that includes a background check; adding an important dimension to determine the suitability of a prospective candidate that can not be found from just a resume.
You must be wary of companies that just send you resumes! It saves them money but increases the number of steps you have to perform to find what you are looking for. You should have a profile that not only outlines the candidate’s skill sets but elaborates on the personal traits, career goals, how he/she would fit into the projects’ environment and working conditions.
The recruiting company worth their fee will know your company’s intricacies, project demands, working environment and management style, taking this into account while interviewing candidates to make sure the fit is right.
